Why wrap the Arc de Triomphe?
The wrapping of islands and monuments were key moments in the creative journey of the late artists Christo Vladimirov Javecheff and Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon. They said that this approach is part of a true search for freedom. It’s an ephemeral artform which must be appreciated urgently before it disappears, but also a work that is free and accessible, with no possession involved (especially since the wrapped Arc de Triomphe is a completely self-funded project.) From September 18th to October 3rd, the Arc de Triomphe in the Place Charles-de-Gaulle will be wrapped in 25,000 m² of fabric and 3,000 m of recyclable polypropylene cord. Beyond the technical feat, the red of the cord contrasting with the silvery blue reflections of the fabric will undoubtedly create a beautiful effect that will profoundly modify the area’s Haussmann-era regularity.
