As summer gets fully underway, we have so much to celebrate… Being able to meet up again, of course, but also the reopening of terraces, cafes, restaurants, theatres and museums. And to add to the good news, we can also rejoice at the opening of a new museum dedicated solely to contemporary art creation: the Bourse du Commerce - Pinault Collection.
Rethinking a historic place
In 2016, the Chamber of Commerce announced its departure from the historic buildings of the Bourse du Commerce. At the same time, the City of Paris declared that it was making the premises available to the French businessman François Pinault to exhibit part of his immense collection of contemporary art. This superb building is listed as a Monument Historique, and its circular volumes and magnificent dome inspired Tadao Ando, the Japanese architect who was charged with redesigning its interiors. Restored with respect for its architectural integrity and decorative details, the Bourse du Commerce has now become a multi-purpose space capable of hosting performances and exhibitions of all kinds.
An enticing programme
From its conception, the intention behind this new museum is that it would host temporary exhibitions and display selections from the immense collection of the businessman and patron of the arts, François Pinault. Currently, you can browse through the first-floor gallery dedicated to photography from the 1970s and 1990s that challenges notions of art, identity, gender and sexuality. Another part of this exciting new art space focusses on the current German art scene with a confrontation between three generations of artists. Your itinerary of discovery will also lead you to the Studio, a basement devoted to video and sound performances.
